Asian Lady Beetle |
Asian Lady Beetles aren't the same ladybugs we grew up with. The color of the shells can vary, as well as the numbers of spots. Look for an M-shaped dark marking on the top front, just before the wings. Asian Lady Beetles were imported to control aphids, and they got out of control.

When Asian Lady Beetles invade your home, they are merely looking for a place to hibernate. They prefer light-colored buildings, espceially those illuminated and warmed by the sun. In the late autumn they start looking for overwintering sites and tend to congregate on the southwest sides of buildings. They prefer older homes because they have more cracks and crevices they can use to get inside your house. Once inside, they will hibertnate inside wall voids, attics, and other secluded spaces. They generally stay quiet until spring, when they try to get outside. Sometimes they get lost and wind up wandering inside your house.
Here are some tips to keep Asian Lady Beetles at bay:
*Check window frames for cracks and holes. Seal them with caulk.
*Check door frames for any crevices where the beetles can hide. Seal them with caulk.
*Check the soffit areas for cracks and voids.
*Don't mash lady beetles that you find in your house. Crushed beetles can stain. Plus the beetles can bite you if provoked!
*Use your vacuum to get rid of the beetles. Change your vacuum cleaner bag after gathering the beetles, because dead Asian Lady Beetles have a bad odor.
